How's the Weather (in Chorillos)?

From sunrise to sunset on the solstice of 21 June 2022, artists and filmmakers around the world responded to the question: how's the weather? This video, recorded with a mobile phone, is the weather report made by artist Luz María Bedoya from the Chorrillos Fishermen's Craft Market, in the Bay of Lima, as an answer to that question.

It is June 2022 and 5 a.m. in Lima. The day starts in the fishing port of Chorrillos in the south of the city, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

Being close to the Equator, Lima should have a tropical climate, but this does not happen because the Humboldt Current brings cold waters from the Antarctic to our shores, which means that the sea surface does not evaporate enough to produce rain. The water remains suspended in the air and that is why we are one of the most humid cities in the world.

For 30 years, Mr. Pedro Julio Chacón has been working in the port, and spends 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, cleaning silversides. This is also part of our climate: very precarious working conditions that contrast with the biological richness of our sea.

In this first report, artist Luz María Bedoya gives a weather report on Lima, the "grey city", as winter sets in.

Luz María Bedoya works at the intersection of photography, video, installation, sound art and text. Her work has been presented at MALI and the San Marcos Museum of Art in Lima, as well as at the International Center of Photography in New York; the São Paulo Pinacoteca; the Image Center in Mexico City; the Blanton Museum in Austin, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art Contemporaine in Paris, the Casa de América in Madrid, among others. She has represented Peru at the 51st Venice Biennale and at the 11th Sharjah Biennale.

¿Cómo está el clima (en Chorillos)?

Desde el amanecer hasta el atardecer del solsticio del 21 de junio de 2022, artistas y cineastas de todo el mundo respondieron a la pregunta: ¿cómo está el clima? Este video, grabado con un teléfono celular, es el reporte climático realizado por la artista Luz María Bedoya desde el Mercado Artesanal de Pescadores de Chorrillos, en la Bahía de Lima, como respuesta a dicha pregunta.

Es junio de 2022 y son las 5 de la madrugada en Lima. Empieza el día en el puerto de pescadores de Chorrillos al sur de la ciudad, en la orilla del Océano Pacífico.

Al estar cerca del Ecuador, Lima debería tener un clima tropical, pero esto no ocurre debido a que la corriente marina de Humboldt trae aguas frías desde la Antártida hacia nuestras costas, lo que genera que la superficie del mar no se evapore lo suficiente para producir lluvia. El agua permanece suspendida en el aire y por eso somos una de las ciudades más húmedas del mundo.

Desde hace 30 años, el señor Pedro Julio Chacón trabaja en el puerto y pasa 10 horas diarias, 6 días por semana, limpiando pejerreyes. Esto también es parte de nuestro clima: condiciones laborales muy precarias que contrastan con la riqueza biológica de nuestro mar.

En este primer reporte, la artista Luz María Bedoya realiza un informe climático de Lima, la “ciudad gris”, a punto de iniciar el invierto.

Luz María Bedoya es una artista peruana afincada en Lima que trabaja en los cruces entre la fotografía, el video, la instalación, el texto y el sonido. Ha expuesto su trabajo en museos peruanos como el Museo de Arte de Lima-MALI y el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo-MAC, y en instituciones como la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, París; el International Center of Photography, Nueva York; el Museo Amparo de Puebla, el Centro de la Imagen en Ciudad de México, la Pinacoteca de Sao Paulo, el Centro Cultural Conde Duque y la Casa de América, en Madrid; el Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, el Blanton Museum de Austin, el Shanghai Himalayas Museum, entre otros.

Ha representado al Perú en la 51 Bienal de Venecia y en la 11 Bienal de Sharjah. Bachiller en Lingüística y Literatura por la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú y con estudios de maestría en el 17, Instituto de Estudios Críticos en Ciudad de México, ha realizado residencias de artista en la Cité Internationale des Arts de París, el Irish Museum of Modern Art en Dublín, la Residencia Internacional de Artistas en Argentina, la Fundación Civitella Ranieri en Umbria y la Fondazione Fotografia en Modena.
